How do I import a car to Jersey?
Jersey residents importing a car must register it immediately: complete a Customs declaration online first, then take original documents to DVS for inspection and registration. GST, Vehicle Emissions Duty and inspection fees may apply as listed on gov.je; confirm before you go. If you are moving here to live, the same destination applies with a slightly different checklist.
Resident importing, or moving here to live?
A Jersey resident importing a vehicle must register it immediately. If you are moving to Jersey and plan to live here for more than 12 months, you also register immediately on arrival - the documents overlap, but the moving-to-Jersey page is the better starting point for that case. Either way, DVS will not register the vehicle until Customs have cleared it.
Declare the vehicle to Customs first
Complete a vehicle declaration online before you go to DVS. GST is 5% on value including freight and insurance if the vehicle comes from within the EU; from outside the EU you pay GST at 5% plus the Common Customs Tariff. Confirm on gov.je. The rides.je import calculator can estimate on-the-road cost before you commit.
Budget for Vehicle Emissions Duty
VED is charged on first Jersey registration, using CO2 or engine cc. Zero-emission vehicles currently have no VED; vehicles over 50 years old have no VED; a 12-month residency relief exists if you qualify. Do not rely on a copied rate table - rates changed from 1 January 2026. Check the VED page.
Take originals to DVS for inspection
Previously registered vehicles need an inspection. Book in person at DVS (La Collette) or email dvsinfo@gov.je with VRD17 and the foreign registration document. Copies and scans are not accepted. From the UK, bring the complete V5C (new style sections 1 and 2, or old style 1 to 8). Inspection fees as listed on gov.je: £46.10 with EU or UK WVTA; £511.50 without (£148.40 motorcycles); £117.80 if over 25 years without WVTA. Confirm before you go.
Finish registration
After a pass you need the foreign registration document or export certificate, proof of ownership if you are not named on it, the Customs import declaration, a completed VRD2, and the £37.70 registration fee. New vehicles follow a DVS check with no fee for that check, plus V55/1 (from the UK manufacturer), WVTA or a Certificate of Conformity, Customs declaration, VRD2 and the same £37.70 fee.
