How do I move my car from the UK to Jersey?
Get the complete V5C from the UK seller, ship the car, complete a Jersey Customs declaration (GST and Vehicle Emissions Duty may be due), then book a DVS inspection at La Collette and register it for a J plate. Fees are as listed on gov.je; confirm before you go.
Get the complete UK V5C before the car leaves
The complete V5C (UK registration document) must come from the seller. Without it there is a risk the vehicle cannot be registered in Jersey. DVLA no longer issues export certificates and will not send a V5C to a non-UK address. All sections are needed: new style 1 and 2, or old style 1 to 8. Originals only; copies and scans are not accepted.
Ship the vehicle
Once the car arrives, a foreign-plated vehicle may only be driven to its place of storage or directly to DVS for registration, and it must be insured for that journey.
Complete a Customs declaration before DVS
You cannot register at DVS until Customs have cleared the vehicle. Make the declaration online. If you import from within the EU, GST is 5% on the value of the vehicle at import, including freight and insurance. If you import from outside the EU, GST is 5% plus the Common Customs Tariff. Confirm the current rules on gov.je before you go.
Pay Vehicle Emissions Duty if it applies
VED is due when a vehicle is first registered in Jersey, based on manufacturer CO2 (or engine cc if CO2 is not available). Fully electric (zero-emission) vehicles currently have no VED. Vehicles over 50 years old have no VED. A 12-month residency relief exists if you meet the conditions on the VED page. Rates change; new rates applied from 1 January 2026. Use the rides.je import calculator for a working estimate, then confirm on gov.je.
Book a DVS inspection at La Collette
Previously registered vehicles need an inspection. Book only in person at DVS or by email to dvsinfo@gov.je with VRD17 and the foreign registration document. Inspection fees as listed on gov.je (confirm before you go): £46.10 with EU or UK WVTA; £511.50 without, or £148.40 for motorcycles; £117.80 if over 25 years old without WVTA.
Register and get a J plate
After a pass, complete VRD2 and pay the registration fee of £37.70. You will also need the foreign registration document, proof of ownership if you are not named on it, and the Jersey Customs import declaration. If you intend to live in Jersey for more than 12 months you must register immediately. A specific J plate can be requested separately.
