How do I register a car in Jersey?
You must register a car in Jersey immediately if you are moving here for more than 12 months or you are a resident importing one. Previously registered vehicles need a DVS inspection and original documents; the registration fee is £37.70. Fees are as listed on gov.je; confirm before you go.
Check whether you must register now
Register immediately if you are moving to Jersey and plan to live here for more than 12 months, or if you are a Jersey resident importing a vehicle. A foreign-plated car may only be driven to its place of storage or to Driver and Vehicle Standards (DVS) for registration, and you need insurance for that journey. DVS is at La Collette.
Use original documents only
All documents needed for registration must be originals. Copies or scans are not accepted. If the car is coming from the UK, you must get the complete V5C from the seller. DVLA no longer issues export certificates and will not send a V5C to a non-UK address. All sections of the V5C are needed: new style sections 1 and 2, or old style sections 1 to 8.
Book a DVS inspection for a previously registered vehicle
Every vehicle previously registered elsewhere needs an inspection before it can be registered in Jersey. Book only in person at DVS or by email to dvsinfo@gov.je, attaching the completed booking-in form (VRD17) and the foreign registration document. Inspection fees as listed on gov.je (confirm before you go): £46.10 with EU or UK Whole Vehicle Type Approval; £511.50 without WVTA, or £148.40 for motorcycles; £117.80 if the vehicle is over 25 years old and without EU or UK WVTA.
Complete registration after a pass
If the vehicle passes, you will need the foreign registration document or export certificate; proof of ownership if you are not named on that document (purchase receipt, bill of sale or invoice); a Jersey Customs vehicle import declaration; a completed VRD2; and the registration fee of £37.70.
Registering a new vehicle
New vehicles are checked by DVS before registration; there is no fee for that check. Call ahead to book. You will need a declaration of newness (a V55/1 from the manufacturer when importing from the UK), evidence of EU or UK Whole Vehicle Type Approval or a Certificate of Conformity, a Jersey Customs import declaration, a completed VRD2, and the £37.70 registration fee. Vehicles without EU or UK WVTA need an inspection first (£511.50, or £148.40 for motorcycles).
Budget for Vehicle Emissions Duty
VED may be due before the vehicle is registered, based on the manufacturer CO2 figure or, if that is not available, engine cubic capacity. Zero-emission vehicles currently have no VED; other rates are published on gov.je and change over time (new rates from 1 January 2026). Confirm the current figures before you go.
