How do I transfer a J plate?
Jersey registration numbers are the property of the Government of Jersey. You can request a number, retain one when a vehicle is sold or exported, or exchange plates with another owner through DVS, paying the fees published on gov.je. Confirm those fees before you go.
Understand who owns the number
Registration numbers are the property of the Government of Jersey. The Inspector of Motor Traffic may allow the exchange or retention of numbers in certain circumstances.
Request a specific number
Buy the right to display a number first: £250 for 5 or 6 digits, or £3,500 for 4 digits. There is a further fee to assign it to a vehicle: £115.60 if the vehicle is already registered in Jersey, or £37.70 if the vehicle is being registered. The number you want may not be available. Fees as listed on gov.je; confirm before you go.
Retain a number
You can retain a number when a vehicle is permanently exported, scrapped or sold. As the registered owner the fee is £115.60 per 6-month period. If the number is granted to a different person, the initial retention fee is £133.90. Complete form VRD28 and the original VRD1 for the vehicle, then send them to DVS with payment.
Exchange numbers with another owner
Both registered owners complete a VRD28 and take the forms together to DVS with the original VRD1 for each vehicle, and pay £231.20.
How to pay
Pay by card, cash or cheque payable to the Treasurer of the States. Do not send cash in the post.
